Byron was platted in 1864 by George W. Van Dusen, who named it after his birthplace of Byron, New York. A post office was established in 1868, and the city was officially incorporated on February 12, 1873. Before the town was laid out, a small community called Bear Grove existed west of present-day Byron. The Winona and St. Peter Railroad reached town in 1865, connecting Byron to Kasson and sparking early growth. The historic 1938 City Hall still stands at Byron Avenue and 4th Street. Today Byron has evolved from a small farming community into one of Olmsted County's fastest-growing residential cities.
