Byron was platted in 1864 by George W. Van Dusen, who named the community after his birthplace of Byron, New York. A post office has been in operation since 1868, and Byron was officially incorporated on February 12, 1873.
Before the town was established, a small community known as Bear Grove existed west of present-day Byron. The Winona and St. Peter Railroad reached the town in 1865, connecting Byron to neighboring Kasson and spurring early growth.
The old City Hall, built in 1938, still stands in the center of town at Byron Avenue and 4th Street. Today, Byron has grown from a small farming community into a thriving residential community while maintaining its small-town character and values.
